Study on CoQ10, Selenium, and Telomeres

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has been around for decades, and is well-known for its wide range of potential benefits for heart health and longevity.

This study suggests that CoQ10 and selenium could help preserve telomere length. Telomeres, the tiny caps protecting your chromosomes, are said to shorten as you age.

The topic of telomere shortening with age has been debated for years, but this study provides further insights into it.

Study Details:

This 10-year study focused on older adults with low selenium levels, common in regions with poor soil quality.

  • Details: participants received daily supplements of selenium (200 µg) and CoQ10 (200 mg) or a placebo for 42 months.

  • Results: those taking the supplements experienced significantly less telomere shortening compared to the placebo group.

A further 6-year follow-up revealed that individuals with longer telomeres had a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

This suggests that protecting telomeres could lead to a longer and healthier life, and the effect was observed in both men and women.
Graphical Summary from the Study.  (Opstad et al., 2022 | Nutrients) Selenium (Se) and coenzyme Q10 (Q10) prevent telomere shortening and cardiovascular (CV) - linked mortality in older adults. Longer telomeres are associated with longer survival.

CoQ10's Dual Role: Energy + Cellular Protection

CoQ10 is a naturally occurring compound in your body that plays a vital role in producing energy and protecting your cells.

  • It is often referred to as the “spark plug” for your cells because it is essential for generating energy within your cell’s powerhouses, the mitochondria.

  • As a potent antioxidant, CoQ10 helps neutralize harmful molecules called free radicals that can cause damage to your cells and contribute to various health issues.

  • CoQ10 is shown to lower with age and this may coincide with an increase in oxidative stress and inflammation.

The dual role of providing energy to your cells, while safeguarding them from harm
, makes this a powerful compound, that plays an important role in healthy aging.

CoQ10 Research Shows A Range of Potential Benefits

Heart Health: A review of 14 studies revealed that heart failure patients using CoQ10 had lower mortality risk & improved exercise capacity compared to those on a placebo.†

Cholesterol Support: A trial on people with high cholesterol showed that using CoQ10 reduced blood triglycerides and LDL levels while increasing HDL levels. †

Male Fertility: A study showed 3-month CoQ10 supplementation in infertile men significantly improved multiple reproductive parameters. †

Female Fertility: A meta-analysis on women undergoing fertility treatments led to higher pregnancy rates. †

NMN Reduced Cellular Aging & Improved Survivability in Mice

RESEARCH
A new study has illuminated the effects of intraperitoneal (IP) injections of NMN on cellular aging, inflammation, mitochondrial function, and survivability in mice - especially in relation to tumor progression.
  • Reduced cellular aging, improved mitochondrial function & limited neuroinflammation
  • Enhanced anti-tumor immunity & prolonged survival in tumor-bearing mice
“Supplementing with NMN to increase NAD+ levels could enhance survival rates in mice while also reducing senescence and inflammation.”

NMN Protects Skin & Improves Prognosis in Psoriatic Mice

RESEARCH
A recent study evaluated the effects of NMN administered orally and topically on psoriasis symptoms and recovery in mice.

Oral and topical NMN administration in mice alleviated psoriatic symptoms and modulated the immune response. NMN prevented the decrease in SIRT1, a protein important for cellular health, in the skin of psoriatic mice.

“We demonstrated that NMN could ameliorate psoriasis-like symptoms and inflammation in an IMQ-stimulated mouse model and improve therapeutic prognoses by activating the SIRT1 pathway.”
